tonight at eight. cleaning up after one storm. preparing for another. after taking a pounding from a series of fronts over the weekend. bay area residents and crews take advantage of a brief break in the weather to pick up the mess. in the east bay. the downpour sent dirt and debries flowing onto roads. even blocking one in contra costa county. in the south bay. residents told to get out of their homes after a creek started

it did use a sandbags, however she did not. new tonight at eight. charges have been filed against a suspected drunk driver. police say the 25-year-old woman hit a group of pedestrians on twin peaks last week. killing one of them. 23-year-old gina eunice faces several felony counts. including hit-and-run. police say that thursday night she hit four people on christmas tree point road. knocking them down the hillside. the woman who died was a 56-year-old chinese citizen. eunice is due to be >> the search for a suspected drunk driver who escaped police by jumping into a rain-swollen creek has been called off-- for now. police stopped the man in the area of sir francis drake boulevard and college avenue around 12-30 this morning. they say he ran off - and lost sight of him. the man san jose police have who was stabbed to death at a graduation party friday night. 30-year-old being held in the office of an insurance agency owned by his cousin -- on oakland road. his death it is the san jose. there are no this man is in custody tonight in connection to a pipe bomb investigation. witnesses say they saw frank trout walk out of a home with burned hands. police say he later admitted he'd been making pipe bombs.streets in the area

some tahoe area ski resorts are reporting near record amounts of snow. kron 4's charles clifford is live tonight in the east bay with a quick look at traffic and an update on the conditions in tahoe. charles? >> reporter: this is a caltrans camera along interstate 80 at the donner summit. the road is clear, but look at the piles of fresh snow one the sidesa couple miles away, same story near the the donner lake exit. now even though the 80 looks good at the moment, caltrans is screening trucks for snow chains eastbound at applegate and westbound in truckee. now let's take a look along highway 50 in south lake tahoe. again lots of fresh new snow, but the roads are clear. maybe a little slick

here. now, if you're headed to the mountains to go skiing. it's all good news. to the north, squaw valley and alpine meadows are reporting their second snowiest christmas on-record. in the past week squaw has received 70 inches of new snow. 220 inches in total so far this season. northstar has received 54 inches over the past 48 hours. to the south, heavenly also is reporting 54" of new snow just over the weekend. and finally this is a webcam view from kirkwood, which says it has received up to 84" of snow in the past week alone. now, the skies were clear monday afternoon, but more snow is forecast for the sierra starting on christmasin the newsroom, charles clifford kron 4 news.

>> catherine: in upstate new york - volunteer firefighters were ambushed at the scene of a house fire today. two of them were shot and killed.and a convicted felon is being blamed. it happened in the town of webster, near rochester. aside from the two firefighters killed - two others are injured. kron4's grant lodes has the story. >> firefighters were not allowed to even battle the massive fire for nearly six hours this morning. that's because the fire scene quickly turned into a crime scene. right as the volunteer firefightrs were arriving on scene.police say 62-year- old william spangler was perched like a sniper.firing off rounds towards the unsuspecting first responders. two were killed. 43 year old mike chiapperini >> people of a pickup in the

middle of the night to go out and fight fires do not expect to be killed. >> - who also served as the town's police department public information officer. and 19-year-old tomasz kachoofka. kachoofka and chiapperini's son were best friends. two other firefighters who were shot are expected to recover. police say before dawn.the suspect, william spengler set a house and car on fire to lure the firefighters. as soon as they arrived, police say he started shooting. while police were looking for the shooter.the fire spread.engulfing 7 homes. the suspect was eventually found dead near the fire scene.after apparently shooting himself. and he was not even allowed to have a gun. spangler is a convicted felon.he was convicted of beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer back in 19-80. spangler served 17 years - and police say it's unclear what his motive was for today's shooting. the town of webster, new york is now mourning. the joy of christmas replaced by pain and grief. >> very difficult >> it's just devastating. >> the family it is going to be without the family members. >> grant lodes, kron 4 news.

>> catherine: the suspect's home was one of the houses which burned. he had lived there with his sister - who is missing. a vigil was held tonight for the firefighters who died. >> in other national news. a police officer and a bystander were shot and killed in suburban houston this morning. it began when the officer made a traffic stop. the suspect drove away - and later began shooting from a parking lot. police say the man shot and killed a bystander, then fired at the officer who was killed. the suspect was also shot - and is in critical condition. police say they have no idea why he opened fire. >> catherine: a 17-year-old boy in massachusetts will spend christmas in jail - after threatening to shoot up his school. he says it was only a joke when he told police about his plan to target his high school his attorney says the school has had 'real' threats in the past - and it's not fair to single out her client. he'll spend at least the next 3 days in jail. >> also in texas.six children were hurt when a

gasoline can exploded in a backyard today. the children in the dallas area had been sprinkling gasoline on a fire pit in the town of mckinney. the gasoline can blew up, burning the children. some were seriously injured. police say adults were inside the house when it happened. a man who had been working on a cell phone tower in spokane washington was left dangling sunday.after he slipped out of his harness. he was trapped for about 30 minutes - although a co- worker was able to hang onto him until firefighters arrived. they raised a ladder - and got him down safely. >> it is christmas eve and we have enjoyed a nice day with the sunshine, blue skies and clear conditions for this evening. great weather for traveling in. dry conditions and higher charge of a local airports, no delays. as to go towards tomorrow, that a creative rick story. the increase with clouds that could be a different--story. we are

big stories we're following. crews are cleaning up damage left by this weekend's storm. one creek in east palo alto surged past flood levels and damaged nearby homes. the water levels have subsided, but could rise again with another round of rain tomorrow. and that storm has brought heavy snow to the sierra.just in time for the christmas. many ski resorts say it's going to be one of the snowiest holidays on record. the roads are open tonight -- but that can change quickly. >> and one north bay road is closed this christmas eve after a 12-inch water main broke in mill valley this morning. crews are working to fix it.but marin avenue at bell lane remains closed. there's no word yet on when it will reopen.
